Happy New Year Newsletter

Dear Customers,

We sold 2 more ricks of firewood, causing us to be out of wood for the rest of the winter.  But we are restocking for next year.

We also sold the rest of the chickens and introduced 11 new ones into our coop, they should be laying in about 2 weeks.

Fun Fact: It is unlucky to eat chicken on New Years eve.

Thanks,
Harry and Lauren Hawkes

Dear Customers,

In case you didn't catch the fun fact last week, could you please return the green egg cartons to be environmentally friendly.

If you are short on gifts this year, we have gift cards, Uncle Joe's Peppers, and ricks of firewood that can be delivered up to the 23rd and the days following Christmas.

Fun Fact: In Japan it is a common practice to eat fried chicken for the Christmas meal.

Happy Holidays,

Harry and Lauren Hawkes

Dear Customers,

We have had a very successful week with the chickens still producing great in the cold weather.

While its getting colder outside, you could be getting warmer with our firewood.

We ordered 3,000 worms for the new leaf piles today, so we will have more compost sooner.

Fun Fact: The only way that the green egg cartons can reduce waste is if they are returned, so please return them as soon as possible.

Thanks,
Harry and Lauren Hawkes

Dear Customers,

We sold another cord of wood and there are still several ricks left for sale, please let us know if you would like some before we run out.

If you would like eggs, please contact us so you do not have to return empty-handed.

If you are looking for a stocking stuffer, our peppers are sure to spice up your Christmas morning.

Fun Fact: If you suffer from Alektorophobia, you have a fear of chickens.

Thanks,
Harry and Lauren Hawkes

November 25, 2012

Dear Customers,

We hope you had a nice and relaxing Thanksgiving with your families.

We had a very busy week preparing and delivering 6 orders of wood and an order of compost.  A valued customer said "The firewood you brought is awesome!  Burns incredibly well. At the rate of the past couple days, we will be calling for a reload in a few weeks"

We are now sold out of compost until next spring when the next batch should be ready.

Fun Fact: Each year, about 60% of the eggs produced are used by consumers, about 9% are used by the foodservice industry and the rest are turned into egg products which are used mostly by foodservice operators to make the meals we eat in restaurants and by food manufacturers to make foods like mayonnaise and cakes mixes.

Thanks,

Harry and Lauren Hawkes

November 19, 2012

Dear Customers,

We have nearly finished the leaves in the pasture so we plan to make our wood deliveries on Wednesday and through the Thanksgiving weekend.

Now that we have a light on a timer in the chicken coop, the egg production has gone up.  In 8 weeks, the new chicks will begin laying eggs, almost doubling production

Fun Fact: The process for a hen to lay an egg takes 24 to 26 hours.

Thanks,
Harry and Lauren Hawkes

Dear Customers,

I added more photos to the website, I hope you find them interesting.

We sold out of eggs, but please send us an email if you would ever like any eggs.

Fun Fact: Providing that pressure is applied at the ends and not the middle of a chicken egg, a well-formed egg shell can support up to nine pounds of pressure before breaking.

Thanks,

Harry and Lauren Hawkes

Dear Customers,

We sold three ricks of firewood this week and one was purchased from the website using Paypal which was a first for the business.

As usual the chicks and chickens are doing well and they all survived Sandy.  Using the timer to give them more light in the morning appears to have increased egg production.

Fun Fact: Chickens will be less 'flighty' if while tending a pen or chicken house the caretaker walks backwards.

Thanks,

Lauren and Harry Hawkes

Dear Customers,

We currently have 5 dozen eggs,  please let me know if you want a dozen and I will set them aside for you.

I also updated the website and you can now preorder laying hens.

Fun Fact: A whole egg is about 3 tablespoons worth of liquid, the egg yolk measures about 1 tablespoon of liquid. Older hens tend to lay bigger eggs but double-yolked eggs are produced by younger hens whose egg production cycles are not yet synchronized.

Thanks,

Harry and Lauren Hawkes

Dear Customers,

Today we cut a cord of firewood for a customer and I recommend it for the cold months coming soon.

The chicks are doing very well and are all thriving. They are hopping and flying around which is a great sign. They will be laying in a few months.

Fun Fact:  Roosters perform a little dance called ‘tidbitting’ in which they make sounds (food calls) and move their head up and down, picking up and dropping a bit of food. Researchers have found that females prefer males that often perform tidbitting and have larger, brighter combs on top of their heads

Thanks,

Harry and Lauren Hawkes

Dear Customers,

Egg production is slowing as the temperature continues to drop.  We will have to keep a light on for the chickens for at least 14 hours a day to keep them laying.

Despite the cold 32 degree weather, the chicks have all survived and are doing well.

Firewood is available, and please return green egg cartons.

I added new pictures to the website from the fair. You can view them here.

Today's fun facts come from the Backyard Poultry magazine:  Eggs contain almost all nutrients necessary for life, except vitamin C.  They also contains antioxidants that reduce the risk of some eye and heart diseases.  Second to mother's milk, eggs have the highest quality protein found in food.  In addition, eggs produced by chickens with access to pastures contain less cholesterol and saturated fat, but more vitamins A, D, and E, omega 3, folic acids, and beta carotene compared to eggs laid by caged hens.

Thanks,

Harry and Lauren Hawkes

Dear Customers,

Little excitement this week on the farm.  All of the baby chicks are still alive and thriving and Sammy the dog did not eat anything important.

Today I tried to make tomato sauce and I am now considering making it for sale.

Now that the cold weather is here, I highly recommend our firewood to keep yourself warm!

Fun Fact:  Chickens can cross breed with turkeys to create something called a "turkin"

Thanks,

September 30, 2012

Dear Customers,

We had an exciting week at Hill House Farm, we added 31 new animals and one of them includes Sammy.

Sammy is a 5 month old chocolate lab and there are pictures of him on the website (Click Here).

The 30 chicks that we ordered are here and are growing strong and will be laying in 18 weeks. They will produce multiple colors of eggs.

Fun Fact:  A female chicken will mate with many different males but if she decides, after the deed is done, that she doesn’t want a particular rooster’s offspring she can eject his sperm.  This occurs most often when the male is lower in the pecking order.

Thanks,

Harry and Lauren Hawkes

September 23, 2012

Dear Customers,

The 30 peeps that we ordered will be arriving on Wednesday.  My mom will pick them up from the post office.

We had the 9 remaining chickens from 4H processed and we may start selling meat birds in the future. If we do, they will be available from the website for preordering.

I will continue to work on the website so it should be without errors within the week.

Fun Fact: There are more chickens on earth than humans.

Thanks,

Harry and Lauren Hawkes

September 17, 2012

Dear Customers,

We apologize for having a shortage of eggs because of the fox in the pasture.

To help relieve the problem, we will now be ordering 30 more peeps:  Ameraucanas, Golden Comets and Barred Plymouth Rocks.  We are also now adding full grown chickens to the product list. We already have two customers.

Also, I have been working on the technology for the business. You can now place orders online and I have created an app for macs (not windows, iPhones or iPads) and you can download it by clicking on the icon below.  When placing orders online, please email me with your purchase so we can put your name on the product and be sure to have it ready for you.

Fun Fact: Chickens are native to jungles in Asia.

Thanks,

Harry and Lauren Hawkes

September 9, 2012

Dear Customers,

Thanks for all of your support throughout this week. We sold out of eggs once again and had our first purchase of compost.

Due to the support of customers from buying products and making donations, as well as the fair winnings, we expect to donate at least $100 to the El Salvador school library and will continue donating in the future.

Fun Fact: A chicken can travel up to 9 miles an hour.

Thanks,

Harry and Lauren Hawkes

September 3, 2012

Dear Customers,

We had a busy week at the fair, winning supreme ram (best of show) and
qualifying for supreme ewe in the open class. In addition, Avery and
Addy won many first place ribbons with their sheep. See our winning
best of 5 flock picture below.

We auctioned off 2 pens of 4 chickens. Thank you Mrs. Immel and Uncle
Joe and Grandpa for buying the chickens. The proceeds from the auction
and winnings from the sheep will go to the business.

Lauren won best female duck and Addy won first place for showmanship
with her duck.

Overall, we had a successful week with many sales for the business. We
will also be getting a fresh set of peppers soon from our Great Uncle
Joe and Uncle Bob.

Like always if you would like something set aside, you can email us
beforehand.

Fun Fact: it takes 4 lb. of feed to produce a dozen eggs.

Thanks,
Harry and Lauren Hawkes

Dear customers,

This week we learned the downsides to free ranging as we lost 4 chickens
to a fox. Hopefully today we don't lose any more!

We apologize if you showed up this week and were not able to get a dozen
of eggs. The easiest way to avoid this, although not required, is to
email us ahead of time and we will set aside a dozen for you.

Don't forget that we also sell compost, peppers, and firewood.

Next Saturday, Lauren and I invite you to come to the Great Geauga
County Fair to bid on our pens of chickens that we have been raising.
We will each be selling a pen of 4 Cornish Cross chickens. This will be
our second year raising chickens. We received these chickens in the
middle of July and have been taking care of them throughout the summer.
Also at the fair, we will be showing breeding Shropshire ewes, a ram
lamb and ducks.

The sale of these chickens will go to the business.

The auction will be on Saturday September 1st, at 4pm. If you have any
questions or are interested in buying our chickens please contact Harry
on his cell at 216-904-3550 or our home at 440-893-9001. You can also
email Harry at hhawkes77@gmail.com. If you would like to see the
chickens before the fair please contact us.

We hope to see you at the auction.

Fun Fact: A rooster announces to a flock of chickens that he's found
food with a took, took, took. But the hens dont pay attention if they already know that there is food around.

Thanks,

Lauren and Harry Hawkes

Dear customers,

Thank you for supporting us, and now you will be supporting the people
of El Salvador. We are donating a third of our profits to help build a
new school library for music and books in the village of Chiltiupan.

For those of you that have used the green egg cartons please return
them.

Fun Fact - The chicken is the closest relative to the Tyrannosaurus Re
